What would you paint a galvanised chassis with?

As above really - I have a new galv chassis for the 110 coming next week. I want to paint it black on the outside to give extra protection and I want it to be black!

What would you recommend using? Something that wont peel and flake/chip off in a year or two.

I also intend to liberally spray the insides with waxoyl or similar. Any thoughts on whats best there? I always get the impression waxoyl isnt what it used to be.

Black waxoil, protects all the threads on the bolt ons at the same time.

Black bitumastic, not the stuff they sell for underseal, but the paint farmers use for tin roofs. It will go dull and if you ever need to remove it you will find it very difficult, but sticks to galve like nothing else.

You need to use a product like T-wash first.

Oh, and a sacrificial layer of oil/wax/grease based stuff on top.

I used Hammerite "Special Metals Primer" followed by two coats of Wilkinsons satin black household paint.

First of all, spray it down with " Etching Thinner ", so the paint has a bite into the metal; far less likely to flake or peel.

The modern way to cover difficult substrates like galvanising is Epoxy primer, followed by whatever colour coat that you choose. You could even tint is very dark grey and not bother with a topcoat.

Does more damage than good these days.

See it all the time...just an absolute disgrace of corrosion because the waxoyl has trapped moisture and salt.

Meanwhile every car I've done with bilt hamber is almost as fresh as the day it was done....even some 5 years later and used in the winter.

Personally I'd hit it with epoxy, then corrosion inhibiting wax.... you'll be long gone by the time it rusts then.

As ajl says, the easiest way is surly to use epoxy primer. Check the datasheet but I believe it can go straight into fresh galv with no mordant wash. Ie you can take delivery and get straight on it.

Epoxy is (generally but check) non isocyanate so, whilst sensible ppe is required, it's not got quite the same outlay as requiring air fed.

Im a fan of ACF50 on the inside , and for the hour it takes just re-apply every two years ,, I t wash then paint galv, for no other reason than thats how Ive always done it and its worked so far.

I found a good few cans of Waxoyl in my late father-in-law's garage if you're interested. If I was to guess I'd say they were probably 1980s vintage.
