What welder do I want?

Hi,

I am an amature welder at best, mostly learnt by watching YouTube videos and giving it a go with my grandads old arc welder.

I'm looking to get a new one soon and I wondered if it was possible to get an arc welder that would allow me to weld 1.5 mm mild steel sheets.

I have tried in the past but my work almost always turn into a pool of metal rather than a weld. I tried everything I could, using smaller and bigger sticks, adjusting the amp but nothing worked. I'm wondering if it's just the type of welder that's not suited to it and maybe I need mig for this job.

Anyways, if I were to get one what would I be looking out for?

Want or need ,,,,

What do you intend to weld , its quite unusual to weld things that thin with stick these days , your in the mig zone normally , just asking as it plays a huge part in machine choice , for example a multi process machine would get you a lot more flexibility for future uses.
Ive done stainless hand rails on site with stick at 1.5 or 2mm and finished it by hand too , but its no fun.

And it's not very easy, either.
Generally it's mig for thinner & stick for thicker materials.

Thanks for the replies guys, I figured it may be more a mig thing I'm after.

Reason I say I'm looking into a stick welder is because I don't really have the room or correct setup here to keep gas lying around so mig isn't as easier of an option over stick.

If I am to get mig what would you suggest I look out for. It's been a long time since I've done it back at uni.

There are quite a few rent free gas options , basically you buy a full bottle of gas , and take it back and swap it for a full one , pay the price of the gas , and the bottle stays with you , when you want you cash it in again ..
like old pop bottles used to be .. That may make mig more realistic ,
Next question ,,, Budget ,, remember you may need a mask and gloves , and if mig / multi process , gas and bottle too ... and some consumables.

But you could give it a wipe with some thinners ,, just to be extra nice ,,,

No I'm the other sort.
Unshaven coz it's too much effort clothes covered in grease and oil because I'm a dirt magnet and stopped giving a fig what people thought of me decades ago.
Oh yeah. And too busy to have a social life

I've got the thermal arc 211i fabricator and I love it you will have no problems with it as a welding instructor on this forum told me its worth every penny of the money hes asking that paint should come off quite easy

Be a few days before they go up. Need to finish off the repair on the compound arbour and get them photographed.
Then sort out what's being sold with what lathe.
