It may well be that this can be wired as a delta motor. If it was a fan motor then its possible that it was designed to run star/delta start where the motor is run up on star the switched to delta after a short time.
As far as i know though the number of poles determines the speed so it could be that there are two sets of windings.
Can you take a photo of the terminal box on the motor. Also there is usually a diagram on the inside of the cover. This describes the different ways to wire up the motor
Yes. I disconnected the motor as I wanted to clean it, so I drew a diagram on the cabinet as I knew I would instantly forget it

Here is the diagram, which I don't fully understand, is it talking about hard wiring to one speed?
