Don't know much about them but isn't laser more accurate and cleaner cutting than water jet? + there's got to be a lot less mess!

The guys at the local laser and jet cutters, say the jets more accurate, and its of course a cold cut, so is ideal for any material, They have a profile on display thats the same shape, cut in both leather, and 1" M/S...

TBH I wouldnt be disapointed if either machine found its way in my direction...

Also watched a lad welding s/s bike exhaust, he was doing a good job Sam, you will be pleased

I was wondering what you meant by that! I had Eddie on the phone this morning the penny finally dropped.
That was signs for down the Clydebank canal that is being revamped. I have the other side to do as well at a later date.
Did you notice the nice bends in that 2" stainless tube formed with the
MKY2K roller.

If you are talking off the 2" tube hanging on the wall at PT, yes and perfectly round. Got me to wondering, does your roller offset both ends of tube prior to commencing full roll operation, or is some other method required to offset to eliminate tear drop shape when complete, also if rolling tube, I assume there is a way to ensure offsets are both square to each other and match perfectly (or near as) while offsetting??

It's good to see so many small and large companies so busy at the moment, hopefully this trend continues for a looooooooooong time!!

As with all ring rollers you will have a tail at both ends.
When rolling the ends come to meet just prise them apart and let them pass each other continue untill you get your required dia. then put into the saw and cut through.
The tightest that Harry was rolling to in 2inch stainless was 1mtr. in dia.

I think ring rolling is my all time least favourite job. Getting them circular is not a problem, it's trying to keep them from curving off to one side as they go through the rolls that's the problem.

I had an interesting problem with a load of rings I had made. This particular batch arrived and were nowhere near round so they went back and another batch came back. This time round but not flat so they went back too. It turns out that the second batch were done by hand, hence not being flat. The interesting bit (or at least I found it interesting ) is why the first lot weren't round. They'd been made from a non-drawn mild steel which turned out to have a less than even diameter. When they went through the rolls the varying thickness caused a varying bend! After taking two loads back, I don't think they'll be making the same mistake again! Though I did feel sorry for the guys who supply me the steel since it wasn't them rolling it. they got someone else to do it. I think they got the money back though.

Funnily enough I had a look at your machine, Sam, when I was thinking about making the rings myself. After this little episode though I decided it was best to get someone else to so I could hang it round their neck when it went wrong!

I built my own engine crane over ten years ago from some plans in practical classics magazine

It uses a 2 ton hydraulic bottle jack for lifting and it comes apart for storage in about 10 minutes

The jib has 4 reach positions and it has lifted all kinds of engines from cars and even lifting car bodies

with the arm is at it’s longest extension it will lift 250kg and on the shortest 400kg

it uses a 2 ton bottle jack but I’m going to replace it a with a new hydraulic ram

I got hold of the steel from the local stock holders the hook from a tow rope kit

(use the rope when lifting the engine)

and the wheels from an old vandalised Tesco trolley

I never got around to painting it as it never went outside until now

(must get it painted)


I’d never be without one now and it will even go into the back a 2cv so it’s very portable

Mine is built from the exact same plans and with a 4 ton bottle jack as the oomph it managed a 2.8i V6 out of an XR4x4 no problems and thats quite a hefty lump.Mine got a coat of Machine Mart red too

What size were the rings then Archie?

For small ones i just coil up a big length of bar, then slice straight down the middle making half a dozen at a time. A few taps with a hammer at strategic points and they are flat.

Beceause of the nature of rolling, unless you cut the material to the exact length to form the ring, then prebend the ends, then roll you dont get a dead flat ring beceause the flat ends need to overlap. In most cases, roll it so the overlap is sprung tightly together, then once the waste is cut off, the ring springs back pretty much flat.

250kg = 550 pounds

400kg = 880 pounds (using a 2 ton bottle jack)

I've had no problems lifting a good size engine with gearbox with it (Citroen Bx diesel)

you may need to use a bigger jack on your side of the pond as you do tend to have bigger motors

or you might be able to get a hold of a good lifting ram

it would give a better lifting range
