What to do, choices, choices!

Hi Noobie here, have registered and hope to get some advice from you all.

I have just been given a Clarke Weld 235E which after many years of dry storage still feeds and sparks. At present I have 2 welders: an SIP Migmate 100A which has proved to be jusrt about adequate but needs a new liner and constant maintenance and sometimes is good and sometimes rubbish. My other welder is an oil cooled Oxford RT140 Arc welder which is used seldom but is fab.

I occasionally weld plates and 10 - 15 mm rods for work and would like the facility to weld car bodywork in the future but am really a 'hobby' welder.

Can the Clarke work at a low enough ampage not to blow away car panels? Will it do everything I want it to? Should I sell or throw away the MigMate and what is the Oxford worth and where do I advertise it?

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum. The Clarke should have a plate or sticker on the back with all the specs on it. That should tell you the min amd max amps of the machine amongst other things. If you can take a pic of it, post it on here and we'll decipher it if you can't make any sense of it.

no sticker on the back of the Clarke, but this is it - not a bad gift I think! Thanks Dave

That is now a discontinued model but I have a feeling the Clarke Weld 230TE which is a current model might be its replacement. Looking on the machine mart website, it states that its lowest current is 30 Amps. This is JUST low enough for thin body panels used on cars - lets just say you wouldn't want any more than that or you'll be blowing holes.
