You lot have got dense in your posts. Or, just because I have been out of the UK for awhile, so miss the closet references.

Else where, bloke buys a bunch of eucalyptus for firewood. As that is what is normal for the area(he is told..). Not at all, cork oak is the norm. Euc, is resinous and burns fast and hot, tends to crack fireplaces and cause problems with resin up the flue. Then fires... up there..

Burning unseasoned wood, especially if it's anything with alot of resin, isn't a great idea.
Do you use a proper chimney sweep? Does he not moan at you about it?

Actually, it's a fantastic idea. It is a wood burning stove. It is currently sitting next to the bonfire and the four foot long 4 inch steel flue pipe is as clean as a whistle thanks.

4' long flue, so an outdoor stove?
If so, fair enough, basically an enclosed bonfire.
Indoors it's a terrible idea.
It creates tar, rots liners if one is fitted and contributes to chimney fires.
This is my trade. I deal with the mess caused by people burning unseasoned wood all the time.

If You could turn small diameter round rods about 1' long it could be used as pine welding rod. Not the strongest as oak is better.

We do, I'm dreading him growing up and don't know what we'll do when he doesn't fit up the chimney any more. Probably have to kidnap another one I've cut his gruel to the minimum but he keeps growing.

I will make one observation since you are a relative newbie and to remind one or two others(!)

This is largely a tradesman's website. The men and women who frequent this forum actually do know which end of a spade is the handle. The default position ought to be innocent until proven guilty. Failing that, you might even start off with an informative comment or query based on your knowledge of a subject.

I try to do this all the time and the only downside is that you do have to start off by assuming a level of knowledge in your audience. This can lead to a situation where you may accidentally overshoot and come across as a know-it-all. It is a fine line.

However this is much better than jumping straight in to tell someone they're wrong and then go on to tell them something they already know as if they did not.

But may I also say that suggesting something that can be dangerous in the wrong situation is a "fantastic idea" isn't exactly responsible.
I appreciate people here aren't stupid and all have good common sense.
In my business, if I see something on an installation that is dangerous I have a responsibility. I can't ignore it. We have to condemn the install.
That mindset sort of carries over a little when I see things online where things may be mentioned that I feel I need to say something about.
As a rule, I generally try to stay out of posts or groups in this subject as there is alot of bad practice out there.

You must appreciate that if I see or hear of something potentially dangerous or damaging it's something I'm going to feel the need to mention?

I thought I raised my concerns in a light hearted way, giving you plenty of opportunity to show that you know the situation without me outright calling you on it.

Haha. No it's all good clean fun. You are right to point out those things of course. I was just suggesting you may wish to change your default position of assuming someone is "wrong" without first establishing what it is they are saying. I tend to generalise when I see something I may wish to "correct", rather than point to a specific error I assume the poster may be making. Of course, the other option is simply to ask.

Be careful, i am reminded of the lad who decided to chop down one of the trees on his land for firewood. Turns out it was a walnut tree and the wood was worth serious money for things like furniture veneer and gunstocks. He was not happy when he was told.
