What thickness metal ?

Forgive the dumb question, I am a complete newbie to this. I have a VW Type 25 camper van that needs various body panels replacing. I want to tackle this myself.I have all the time in the world and am about to purchase a middle of the range M.I.G. I will also need to fill in a few non standard holes with the right sort of metal. What type of metal and what thickness would you suggest ?

depends what part of the vehicle to holes are on. if its just body work and not chassis then 1mm should do it. make sure the mig you buy will go down to 30amps

Mild steel sheet between 16 gauge and 20 gauge should cover anything on your vehicle.

Sounds obvious but replacement metal is best if it's the same thickness as you remove. A sheet metal gauge is quite useful...

I was about to say the same. Measure what it is now, and use the same stuff. I'm working on a 70s Vauxhall and that's either 16 (for chassis members) or 18 (for the rest).

Thanks for that guys. No chassis work.That's rock solid. Just body panels . My missus can't get round a corner without clouting something !!!

in that case i would not repair it, just tie tyres around it
