What thickness box section should you use for desks, workbenches etc

Absolutely brilliant for standing at lathes, pillar drills, welding benches for some time.

Yes, its rubber matting. I am clumsy and forever dropping stuff. The mat saves the damage to tools and parts!! It is also thermally efficient and makes a noticeable different to a constant temperature. They help your feet from getting cold and and they reduce fatigue when working stood up.

Brilliant investment. Cost me £100 from eBay to do the whole workshop.

Does the top welder bounce around when moving? As there is no support at the front.

I would suspect your bench lacks movement as you know how to use tools correctly, especially a file!

I dunno about that, I can abuse tools too

Nope, it weighs 30kg so enough weight to hold it down, plus the hoses and cables are attached as well so everything stays nicely in place. The trolly does not bounce around though, with 2 cylinders and 3 welders plus the cart it must weight around 150kg so its firmly planted on the ground and I am not using it as a soapbox racer!!!

Steel grating for the top on a budget,
F clamps fit between the holes so can clamp anywhere on the table too.

I don't think id even want a solid top now after using it for mine.

I thought abou doing that as well. However I use the bench for rebuilding bike parts like carbs and brakes and would end up losing bits through the gaps!

Likewise scribers, centre punches an all manner of such stuff and heck how do you draw stuff out on it? Yesterday I had to weld a load of underground reinforcements, no great tolerance in it but just to get some uniformity I welded one up and marked round it then just matched each subsequent one up to the lines. There is quite a bit you can do like this and it don't half speed the job up when a jig isn't worth making and you don't want or need or want to set each one up perfect.
As a non smoker this is often how I do my "fag-packet plans" so I might be lost without a solid top

Yeah its definitely not good as a layout table but for the price of reclaimed ones its pretty nice.

Could just make a lip for pens/scribers ect like on a white board but they rarely fall through for me so not bothered to.

The clamping anywhere is the part i like, id hate to have to tack things and grind them off.

I don't see much need to tack things to a bench, the only time I ever remember tacking stuff to a bench was a landrover hub when I used to do steel spoke wheels from old rims (used a grinder to spin them and true them and clamping just wont hold such a thing firm for this

Ah yes, I have that stuff for my plasma cutting tray. Thinking of water filling it by putting a tray round it.

I am now going to build a cutting grinding bench as part of my shop re-build / re-work. I will be looking for some HD walkway type steel grating and building a big steel funnel below leading to a box drawer were I might remove the dust. Fixed tall back upstand (about 450mm seems right in my mind presently) to deflect sparks back and fold down side upstands so I can fit one up only for post tops etc., both down for cutting or both up for smaller stuff.
Got the idea after looking at a product called airbench, don't think I need down draft extraction for such a thing (and I now tend to wear a mask for grinding anyhow). Ginding dust plays havock with other equipment though and takes a lot of time clearing each year.
I do use an abrasive wheel chop saw and love its speed of cut but by crikey it makes a mess
