What the heck is a brake shoe lifting tool?

Well I've got one but I can't quite work out its purpose? It's a girling tool so must be some use??

It's a tool used for lifting brake shoes, usually ones made by the manufacturer Girling.

I would imagine it tucks under the face of the shoe to lift it off/on it's perch?

I would say it's for stretching the brake shoe over and onto the cylinder/adjuster.

Edit: place short hook under web and longer straight section rests against side of shoe

Exactly that. That was the first tool I ever made!

One of those things that by the time you remember you have it and get it out of the drawer you have done it with a screwdriver/pry bar

Fighting return springs.

Hope I never have to ever use either ever again!

Yeah like you say I've never found the need for a tool for that , next time I put new linings in something I may give it a go.

A very useful tool. Mine had plenty of use. A damned sight easier than trying to pry the shoe into place with a screwdriver/tyre lever/bit of bar.

I have a similar tool but rarely use it, I also have a very old pair of brake shoe spring fitting pliers that I was given in the early 70s that get used every time I fit brake shoes along with a couple of tools for fitting the steady springs

I've never seen one before but it does look very useful and a lot more controlled

Used to have a pair and they were very handy but I don't do many drum brakes these days and they have gone walkabout and I don't know who has them ( probably someone who died and they got chucked out somewhere) You hook them on the shoe and pull it outwards to disengage it from the slave cylinder and same again to refit and the springs can stay in place.

I don't like doing rear handbrake shoes on cars - where the stub flange covers the shoe mounts - BMW and Volvo XC90's being the worst.

To be honest - I hate doing any job on a car these days.

This gem popped up on the bay of thieves so I grabbed it, spreads hgv brake shoes sets complete with springs so you can just drop them over the hub and release.

Like @Windy Miller was the first tool I made. Piece of flat with a notched chain link welded perpendicular at the end.
