what tap and die brand to choose

Just done a big bunch of 6mm holes in 6mm steel. I really would not want to have a tap break in the hole, so bought decent HSS. Back a bit, Dormer and Presto were go-to names. But I am a bit behind the times in UK.

To ad, I bought 1st 2nd and Plug, used all three. The last in the hand drill.

i have started buying my collection and in the end i picked presto seems a good choice and easy to buy through ebay

I'd recommend http://www.tap-die.com Website is very old skool. They are 5 mins from my front door, and the quality is superb. He supplies to Rolls Royce and Exxon.

Hi all,

I started of with a aldi special buy tap and die set which im wanting to slowly replace with a good quality set.

I have been looking online and the 2 brands that are sticking out are presto and rennie tool co both are made in the uk and you buy them as a set of three instead of a hobby style set (m6-m12 style set)

i want to pick a good quality brand what is known for good stuff and these two brands i can easily buy of ebay and slowly build the set up. There is a couple of quid different presto been slightly dearer.

Has anyone got any of these brands and what do you all think?

There are a couple of "notes" in the add for these spiral taps. One of them reads.............

" Please allow 1-3mm error due to manual measurement. Please make sure you don't mind before you bid. " I would hope that means error in length ?

Edit: Think I'll take a punt on a set when they become available, can't be too bad a loss for about £8 pounds. Got an itch, as an old tapping head I won on ebay arrived today.

used the presto brand taps (m10) and they cut like butter they are in a different league to what i have been using well happy with them, i have been trying to win a good tap handle of ebay for a while now and managed to win a more and wright handle plus i won a brand new boxed pec tools t handle type it says made in the usa on the box so must be a good brand?

I use Völkel or Phantom taps, but almost always buy machine taps, which cut the entire thread in one go instead of the 3 piece hand taps.
Just personal preference tbh, but I find the machine taps easier to use, less prone to break and easier to keep straight.
I can not get a straight hole when using a hand tap, all my holes seem to go in at an angel, wheras with a machine tap I have no issues.
(Rather strange indeed)
