What size outdoor LED floodlights?

Now it’s dark at 5pm I need to replace the two knackered 20yr old outdoor floodlights outside my unit. I have no idea what size LED ones I should go for - they seem to start at 10w up to 500w. They are needed to light the area outside to work in the dark, the area can fit four vehicles parked side by side. They are switched on switches inside, not PIR and not used for security purposes.

Any suggestions welcome.

I've a 30 watt, which is pretty impressive, I'd try a 50 watt as @brightspark suggests. Then consider if it's suitable.

I have a 100 watt in my garden which is two banks of 50 with separate drivers. I am only using one bank, when that one fails I'll disconnect the driver and connect the other side up.

I go by the rule of thumb rightly or wrongly that LED watts x 10 = halogen watts, in terms of light output. It's probably a bit more I dunno but my 50 watts LED lights the garden better than the old 500w halogen.

Thanks, I’ll go for a single 50w as a trial and replace the other with the same if it’s suitable. Glad I asked, I was going to go for 200W !!

I roughly reckon my 30w Led is the same as a 500w halogen, but that's guess work.

I have a mate with a 150w over his garage door. (8ft up etc)

It's almost too much as just get reflections and blinded off everything.

I have a pair of 100W on some 3M uni strut in the chickens field, it lights up about an acre visible (can see em about a mile away!)but very concentrated below the lamps.
I’d space apart a couple of 20 or 30s, LEDs are very concentrated and this will give much better spread and also reduce shadows, plus one failing leaves you with some light still before fixing.

I think I have a 50w one on my garage at about 4m high, it's pretty good lighting for general walking about but not for working on cars in the dark.

agreed, that's the best option, especially as you can get a better spread of light, less shadow, etc. More costly etc, but definitely the better option.

Our now defunct 20w LED floodlight was lighting up area big enough for 4 cars, trailer and a caravan. Bright enough to walk about in but not good enough to work in. 50w should be good but I also would have lights coming from different directions if I was using them to work under

My shed is 7m high at the apex and I was going to put up two 100W LED floods in there to replace the old sodium lamp on one side (the shed is 12m x 20m so these would light a 12mx10m area beneath them). I couldn't decide if 200W was excessive. The other side has 5-6 large fluorescent tubes that provide reasonable light but they are 70W each I think and so that side is 350-420W in total. I will replace these in the same way at some point.
