Sadly it's reminiscent of a Greek (I think!) ship full of holiday makers that was blown of course at night into rocks. The captain was in bar at the time and after the collision, he and the crew jumped in a lifeboat and skedadled without so much as warning the passengers that anything was wrong. It went down and many people perished in the cold water.
The captain and some of the other crew did get hefty prison sentences, but it doesn't excuse the terrible cowardice.
I don't expect a captain to go down with his ship, but he should certainly be the last man off. It's a responsibility not to be taken lightly IMO.
