What size fluid tip for base + clear (no primer)

Hi guys,

I'm just about to buy the Devilbliss FLG-05 gun for spraying and I can't remember what size tip I decided on for base + clear. I will have a separate gun for primer.

Choices are 1.3, 1.4, 1.8, 2.0 - I think I decided on 1.4 previously. Based on the logic that it should send out less fluid and as a newbie that is good (Right!?)

What do you think?

1.4 will be a good all rounder for base and clear, I think I had a 1.5 on mine and I had little experience too before I got mine to respray a car. Clear in particular could do with a small tip - 1.2-1.4 was reccomended IIRC.

You need enough to cover. If you don't put enough on you'll just get a crap finish

You've got to work to the product you're using as well as setting the gun up properly. Too little will give orange peel and horrible finish. Too much will give sags and runs.

You can fix sags in the clearcoat more easily than you can fix orange peel

do a practice piece on an old 1 gallon can or drum thats all i do and works a treat ive sprayed 5 cars and a couple of boats among other stuff all types of paint

Thanks guys.. i'm really looking forward to getting this all setup so I can experiment.

I plan on getting a scrap bonnet that I can practice on first. And I won't move onto my car until I am somewhat comfortable with it. At the end of the day if it turns out crap, I can sand back and start again.

I realised the other day that the only vertical parts I will need to spray on the exterior are the rear quarters, everything else will be flat so that should help prevent runs at least.

Devilbiss do have some charts for different paint manufacturers that recommend which fluid nozzles and air caps to use but they are for there higher end spray guns GTI pro lites etc and they don’t have the flg 05 listed. But it may help Devilbiss charts

I shall follow this with interest!!! I’ve never done any spraying before but have bought the same gun as you with a 1.4 nozzle which I am led to believe will cope with most of the paints I want to spray although a 1.8 seems to be the recommend for high build primer …. I’m not sure if I will get away with just the one nozzle or whether I shall be buying a second nozzle or a second dirt cheap gun dedicated to spraying primer.

You limit the amount of fluids delivered by closing the gap at the fluid tip, too little paint and it will be a dry rough finish, too much paint and or too much pressure you'll get orange peel finish and possibly runs, also be aware when spraying swage lines or similar as the paint can build on them and start to run never do a test on something that absorbs the paint as it's not going to show you anything other then how wide the fan is set, if your spraying 2k and not using a heated booth use a fast activator no need to use rocket or anything stupidly fast
