What size angle grinder?

ime finding it harder these days to get 100mm discs with a M10 bore thread...shame really as its an old skool Makita and a cracker. All the regular suppliers just seem to stock the M14 bore now which is the 4/12".

i would definantly buy a 125mm grinder as the discs are often 3 or 4 p more

when you have a 115mm grinder you have to remember you cant use all of the disc so you may only be able to use 3 inches as the rest is under the nut

a 125mm provides 10mm more of USEABLE disc which is definanlty worth the extra pence

ps has anyone made 125mm discs fit on a 3 inch cutoff tool after they have been worn down enough

i know the speeds may be to fast so you would need to slow them down but are the centres the same

No, the centres are not the same.

On my 'too do' list when I eventually get a lathe is to make an adapter to let me use up all the 125mm centres I've been keeping...

I've done the deal! I bought a brand new Makita 9558NB 125mm (810W) Angle Grinder with 5 1mm discs and two flap wheels delivered for £62 inc. p&p. Seemed a reasonable deal as the wheels are branded quality - I'll report back when I get it and have given it a go cutting my Disco body off!

Took me about an hour to remove the RR body with a 9" grinder.

Mmmm, I've got customers for some of the body off mine!
Amazingly the rear arches/seat belt mountings are good and the boot floor isn't too bad...

Just passed Screwthix, having fell out with the muppet at Halfrauds over a shattered Torx driver, and see they have the DeWalt D28111 850w 115mm on offer at £49.99 - looked tidy.

There good grinders, very powerful, but very loud. Mikata's are a lot quieter, but somewhat less powerful as well, (doesn't normally matter as you never stall a grinder without eating disc's anyway)

I was using my old Screwfix cheap grinder today with the flexible backing pad and fibre disc. I must have had it 6 years and it started spluttering and died on me. I unscrewed the brush covers and one side a spring and a brass thing with a piece of wire attached fell out and on the other side just a sliver of brass. I have a couple of spare brush sets which came with it so I put one set in and away it went again to my surprise. It cost £6.99 and has given great service. My next one will be a 125mm Metabo to match my 9" grinder, sod the expense

I have 3 x 125mm grinders and 2 x 230mm ones, mainly use the 125mm grinders for the light stuff for precision cuts or medium grinding, or if I am off the ground. Anything else that requires heavy metal removal or cutting then the 230mm ones get used. The 125mm discs are better value than the 100mm ones.

already got 3 but the amount of time i save every day not changing discs over makes 1 more hard to resist

ill now have one for every type of disc so in theory the only time i should ever change a cisc is when it is worn down

Makita is performing well! All the body I want off the Disco, for present, is now gone and I have the dubious pleasure of cleaning up the chassis starting from the back end. I bought a 125mm twisted wire brush from Lidl and that seems to work a treat cleaning up the surface rust, its not too bad for a 14 yr old vehicle, but the brush won't last for ever so I need some more. Had a look on Weldequips site and they are not listed so can anyone recommend a brand or a cost effective supplier for these things please?

Had a look at the clarke contractor ones in MM today and they looked a bit bulky.

Thanks Stuart - I've got one of those too, I like the flat type better for what I'm doing. MM don't do the flat ones as far as I can see.

On a very slightly different tack, why can't you get hand wire brushes that last without the wires falling out these days?

i have found the wooden handled ones seem to be better than the plastic handled ones for bristle retention but can snap if you get one with a knot in the handle

i bought 2 100mm wire cup brushes and ended up looking like "pin head" off hellraiser movie....very poorly made and the wire was letting go resembling getting needles fired at my head by an air gun..had to call the wife who pulled them from my head and face including arms too.Should be banned and reported to trading standads as some poor soul with get a pin in the eye ball
