I see it is common but why is lead welding called lead burning?

I guess no one knows. Wikipedia says:

Lead burning is an autogenous welding process. Two sheets of lead are formed mechanically to lie close against each other. They are then heated with the torch flame and flow together.

I don't think the original example was autogenous though.
