What rods??

Hi all I'm currently doing a project that Iv got to weld a small amount of 3mm mild steel tubing onto 2mm mild steel but also a very small amount of 3mm to 5mm

It's needs to be as strong as possible so what would be the best rods for the job??

Would 3.25mm 6013 be enough??

For 2-3mm, I'd go with 2.5mm 6013 or even 2.0mm.

For the 3-5mm would you say the same or 3.2mm??

2mm rods for the 2 to 3mm job I'd say.

2.5mm rods for the 3 to 5mm job. You could do that with 3.2mm but you'd blow holes if you weren't careful.

Try it out on some bits of scrap before tackling the job, so you can see what works for you.

I agree with the rest of the lads, run 2.5mm 6013's around 65-70 amps, and don't hang around for too long on the 3mm steel. Its more than possible when done right

3.2mm will burn through as naturally you will need to run them at higher amps to prevent sticking.

Most literature says it's generally a good starting place is to pick a rod that's half the size of the material to be welded if you're planning on doing it in one root pass. However most people find 2.5mm rods a lot easier to work with than smaller ones, so can do a better job with those on 3mm than attempting it with 1.6mm or 2.0mm if you don't use them often.
