i always seem to split the wood when fitting half inch 1/4 round wooden trims , so i though its best to ask

what nails /pins are right for the job , and any speical method for hammering it on without splitting the thin wood

yes grind the point of the pins or file them off and they will just punch through rather than part the wood and split ive been there and done it

Superglue/ mitre mate does the trick

Depending on what its for, I tend to use an 18g brad gun, without a problem.

Much easier on the fingers too!

You could try a pilot drill hole then pin if you still want to use the nails.

Panel pins are what you need. I would predrill, as the timber used for mouldings has tight grain structure, to get the surface finish people want, problem is it splits very easily.

righto will use a pilot hole , i have done that in the past but assumed there was proper way to do it

That's what I was taught and it works well.

Have a look at veneer pins, I've found them even finer than panel pins - but what's wrong with using some of the fancy glues available these days?

A large proportion of mouldings are made of ramin, which is notoriously hard & prone to split, when you have a house full of 15 panel doors to glaze ie 60 beads & 180 pins per door the way we do it is to cut the head off a longer pin but the same guage as the ones you're using,[panel or better still veneer] put it in your re-chargable drill & use it like a drill bit,it puts a hole in the wood at the right angle,does not remove any wood so you get a good tight fit & it's easy to start the pin, I've done scores of beads like that.

Last two 16 pane doors I've done I just glued the beading on with clear mastic.

Never seen clear mastic [you learn something every day] hope you don't mean the dreaded silicone!! he he, the painters hated it when it was 1st used, it all depends on the architects specifications,if he specifies traditional pinned beads then so be it. if it's a diy job for yourself then anything goes.

As already been suggested -tap the sharp end with the hammer on something solid to blunt the end, rub some candle grease on the pin, tap it in, venner pins are a lot thinner than panel pins, if its hardwood and your near to the end of the timber, then yes consider a very fine drill for a pilot hole.
