What item have you altered to improve it, and in what way did you modify it ?

Also, have you modified an item so that it can be used for a different purpose to the manufactured intention?

I bought two Warn winches after Amazon accidentally listed them for £300 instead of £800.

The mod was to build a custom wiring loom so the winches fit properly. But the winches worked intermittently. Warn initially told me I'd voided my warranty and they won't support me. I explained that in Europe they can't do that as the mod was non destructive and the fault may be unrelated. They looked into the fault further. Turned out I needed to use twisted pair for the signal wires to the switch (modern winches are digital!). Seem to be working now.

Many posts on this forum now get negative opinions / problems raised for no good reason.

Why(?) It introduces a layer of unpleasantness.

I hope these members are also equally as good at problem solving as raising them

I was offering some friendly advice on what may happen if you fit that subframe. It has been covered before on the forum before.

It gives you the opportunity to look into the matter further to confirm whether or not it will pass mot.

By now you should expect to get comment on anything you post on here, wanted or not. It happens to all of us, me included.

But I don't see anyone else typing a very rude, insulting reply saying keep your opinions to yourself.
This is generally friendly forum and a simple post asking for no more discussion on this subject would have had the same effect without insulting anyone.

I managed to kill a new Ryobi 2.2KW electric unit in 3 outings....

So I purchased a Hyundai ex-demo unit about 2 months ago, after giving up with electric type chippers.

Being as it was an ex-demo manufacturers unit the scars and slight damage of use are plain to see, the main problems being a strengthening rod that appears to tie the two outer sides together, but it runs through the middle of the waste exit outlet, so when you are shredding it catches/collects small branches/twigs which build up to block the outlet, so I have to stop the engine and clear the blockage.

I have collected some of the steel I need to modify the chipper shredder over Christmas/New Year hopefully.

The rotating cutter head seems well designed, but the outer surface of the cutting drum appears to be 1.6mm sheet and distorts allowing a larger gap between the end of the blades and the drum wall, thus reducing the shredders ability to shred. So this outer wall will be replaced with a 5mm thick sheet and external bracing to control deformation to a minimum, improving the shredding action.

I have used it for about 10 hours continuous use since purchasing it, it's a great chipper/shredder just needs some improvements to the design. I'll probably do a thread on the up grades, if anybody is interested...

We have a new Titan version of this shredder, the output on ours had an additional mesh guard, got blocked within 10 seconds! The top hopper has a lid with square hole, hole is covered from inside with a semi rigid tough plastic sheet (works like a basic non-return device), can’t get anything in it without jamming on the plastic, lid now removed. Finally, the side shoot had an extra guard, effectively preventing anything bigger than about 15mm (it has 100mm capacity).
So after the removal “mods” it works very well - munching large bushy branches with alarming ferocity :-)

My internal (output drum wall) item 31 and item 7 output chute guard has been removed and thrown away/stored in the shed for modification (), I have also already removed the hard plastic top flap.

I intend to open up the restricted top chute for easier feeding of the shredder, the cross bolt/tube item 23 and 30 is a support bar between the front support legs, which will be removed over the winter.

I intend to make a complete new frame that includes the front leg/wheels, which increases the overall design strength, plus raising the output chute height and allowing for the removal of items 23 and 30.

Items 29 will be replaced with a 5mm thick sheet with extra bracing/webs and I have an idea for item 31 that will also strengthen the outer wall/grid of the shredding drum.

The 100m branch chute (item 48) is just under a metre long on my model it, some other brand models have a much short conical tube this may also be addressed at some point over the winter period...

I should perhaps clarify that my comment above was not aimed at any individual or member.

It's just a general comment that we all should think for a moment when posting - and consider will the observation be well received or is it best left alone.

Not sure electric start is worth the extra expense, I think the battery would go flat due to lack of use, I tend to use the machine once or twice a year maybe?

We will use it more often but that’s a fair point, I’ll be keeping it on a trickle charge to keep it alive.

I have a solar trickle charger attached to my Genset for this exact reason.

I don't think they're awful expensive, so you could pop one on a south facing wall and feed the wires in from outside.
