what mig welder to get

hey all new to the forum got to do some welding on my 4x4 got to been 2mm to 4mm steel what would be the best welder need it to run on 13amp home plug got about £300 any help.

+1 on used, budget is too low to buy much worth having new.

As above, and don't forget to factor in wire, gas, regulator, grinder, helmet, gloves etc.

Thanks for the reply I know I need all the kit to go with the welder, 300 was just the budget for the machine what make do I look out for if going second hand

Welcome. There's a few of you 4x4 chaps round salisbury!

I'm not going to recommend a machine as I don't have enough experience, but what I have found is my Clarke (151) struggles on it's higher settings so if you're planning to do a lot of 4mm stuff then I'd maybe stay away from the "hobby" stuff? As the guys say, a better quality second hand may be the way to go as even the clarkes etc are near or over the 300 mark new.

problem is second hand MIGs are going to be what you come across not what you might look for. Anything around 180 amp ish with a full bottle would be a great buy - just make sure it works ok before you art with your cash ( I suspect you will still need to add a bit ).
I was offered one the other week at gift money from a farmer but it needed a new torch on it just to prove it worked. Then a new reg and the bottle looked visually at the end of its service life. So don't buy rubbish

Depends where you buy them, ex rental units are often well maintained and up together.
It's finding them at the right time and price that's the trouble.

Private sale or ex hire will be your best bet. You'll get an idea as soon as you see it if it's been flogged to death just by it's visual appearance. If your not a welder I suggest you take one with you. If he/she can't produce passable welds with it then there may be something wrong with it.

I've heard these are good old machines. They quite often pop up on selling sites for 220-300 quid. Just incase the op is not aware a lot of the older ones are badged up in snap-on labels. @30 years that has done well mate.

Mines a Cebora Stag 200, its so smooth when welding, Ive tried other makes but they just can't hold a candle to this one, It will weld all day without a hiccup even on a 13 amp plug !!!

Can't beat a good choke and a shed load of capacitors for a smooth arc, well you can, but not without spending big money.

Very true, best £500 I ever spent, thought it a lot of money at the time
