what metal would be best

Ive been asked to make a grill to sit charcoal on with a gas burner underneath , it looks like its 12mm round bar with a 15mm gap inbetween each bar , its near burnt right through so new ones needed , what material would be best Mild steel or Stainless ? any help much apreciated

stainless should last longer all the commercial stuff I use is stainless depends on cost ect if 10 mild ones were the same as 1 stainless i would have 10 mild ones

Well it depends!
How hot is it likely to get.
Don't get me Wrong SS Will cope with the heat just fine but it's also a sod for pulling and twisting and at those thicknesses all welded Up it could be a sod to pull back.
And expensive too if it does end up scrapped.
It's only holding hot coals right?
Id make it from steel and use it till you kill it then make another so many years down the line.

I would make it from mild too if it is going to be kept inside what is the cost differences between the 2? the mild one will last for years anyway and it is never going to be in direct contact with the food

If there are no food regs saying it has to be ss then I should do it in ms

Food regs are funny I did a lot of food and catering stuff once over and it confused me then. No doubt it's got even more complicated now

@Tigman u say coals is it the lava rocks? I had a char grill like that at my last place and the metal work was just a box to hold the rocks straight and uniform below the actuall grill bars them self

It looks like charcoal to me it was very hot , definately 12mm round bar the gas burner is under the bars , charcoal on top then cooking on another grill over the charcoal ! I gave the chap a price for Stainless ! I think I scared him off !

I wouldn't of even quoted him for SS.
Steel would do a perfect job of it.
SS could cause more issues right above the burners and distort and twist.

Thats why I asked , The bars will bend like crazy with the heat from the Gas burner , I think the gas is only to get the charcoal going but the state of the old grill looks like they leave the gas on

charcoal was a a bit white on the edges , Lava rock ? no idea
