No amount of home engineering will contain the shrapnel likely to be generated if that goes bang. Only reliable method is to have it tested regularly by a competent person, follow any advice given and make sure a safety pressure relief valve is fitted and working

Shrapnel from a air tank like that is very very rare

As for shrapnel to form you need a massive failure all over the tank at the same time

What is most likely to happen is it will split along the bottom and if you are in the same room you will find all the pooh has come out. The tank will stay in one piece, just it won't be the same shape as it started off

Different story if you are sat on it when it goes pop

But essentially it will be a rupture not an explosion


This isn't to say you can ignore any safety valves etc but i would not get overly worried

Bore scope and take a look, our main comp is 1960, has an inspection plate, some rust but given they never drain it unlike me it's good condition..

I drained it once for them, forgot to close the drain, got back after lunch and the old boys had stripped it to the crank...lol. Oh well, I did say it was easier to close the drain...lol

A pretty garbage steel has a fail strength of 40K psi ranging to 80 to 90K for decent stuff

bang in a 2 foot radius

1mm wall thickness (0.04")

for the test pressure and you get a stress of 69K

With a decent steel you could get a pressure test out of 1 mm walls


bring it down to you working pressure of 150psi and a wall thickness of 3mm and you are down to a hoop stress of 15K

That is easily a factor of safety of over 2

Thinking about it, the bigger risk might be from the high pressure increase you would see if the room was small if it came out quickly? A huge rush of air into a small space that's got somebody inside might not be a good thing I'd think - though how small it would need to be I have no idea.

Yep - I recall there was a lady killed (think she was a soldier) driving through Dalkeith, which is on the south of Edinburgh, a few years ago. They had changed a bulging tyre and, rather than re-fit it under their 2-seater, she had it on her lap while her chap drove. The tyre let go and killed her

A Cornflake stuck in the wind pipe can kill too... regarding that paticular tank in the OP,s post i dont think we are taking about can it kill but more like the probability of it killing or harming.

Tyres - dangerous isn't the word. Wagon tyres blowing is said to be akin to getting hit by a truck, and there have certainly been enough people flung across workshops or into the roof from it. Most aren't at risk of it happening again...

Even tractor tyres with just 20 psi in kill, and even just the innertube.

jeesus Christ a red fire extinguisher is tested to well over 150 psi and there paper thin . a square 1 gallon oil can with crimped ends can stand 50 psi before ends blow out just turn it upside down and tap along the bottom with ball pein hammer if it dents easy its on way out which is hardly likely

Internal inspection, thickness test and possibly a Hydraulic test, You may find it cheaper to buy a new one

Surely it's easier to pressure test it with water than make an enclosure to contain shrapnel if it bursts? You don't need to get a certified test for £££, a decent and accurate gauge and I'm sure you could do it yourself.

If you make an enclosure how do you know it'll actually work if needed? Plus you'll still need clean pants if it does pop
