What kind of tree?

Linesmen been out clearing some trees. Never seen wood this dark before in the UK. Any idea what kind of wood it is?

It looks like very wet poplar to me, but I am no silviculturist.

Laburnum

Leaves look very elm-like , and the stem diameter is about right for the die-off phase with Dutch Elm Disease.

Colour is very like Laburnum but i have never seen it reach a size like that, bark is wrong too. It could be Alder but im not sure it goes that dark when cut.
If it is laburnum it is prized by wood turners & large sizes are rare & worth money. The timber is also toxic.
I think Oldbike davey may well be right with Elm.

Very similar looking to some cherry laurel that I got given recently. Very fine end grain.
