i got this box made up. at first i thought it was made of that zinc plated sheet you can get of the shelf. TIGed up the corners today and... no problem, welded up really nice, so i thought maybe its not zinc plated, i dont think its stainless (will do magnet test tomorrow). the guy who got it done for me is'nt a metal worker so he's not that well up, but he says that the surface is "self sealing". anybody come across this kind of steel?

Might be a base grade stainless, some of which so I hear has a residual magnetic effect. It does have that dullish look?

the 400 series stainless is magnetic (your american diner type cladding type), but i have never seen it this dull before. hey, chunko, i'm going around to get this box powdered tomarrow (aluminium colour) i'll talk to him about the clear, this guy has used it as well.

we have some thin (1mm) sheets in work that i was lead to believe was zintec - looks similar to galv coating but not exactly the same, ill get a pic tomorrow, has a "flake" effect to it if you know what i mean, whereas in the pics the coating looks uniform?
Actually Hitch, I was pondering why the requirement for zintec as opposed to normal galv process?
I do recall using zintec often for military/offshore/petro-chem/space-defence component manufacture. I also recall after complete manu, work would also be finished with a quality paint surface. Maybe zintec is kinder to paint finish as opposed to normal hot dip galvi??
Anyone have further info to add???

The so called 'galvanised' steel rarely is galvanised in the true sense of electro plating as the zintec you refer to probably is, and I'm sure gives a much thinner and even coating.

well at least i know what it is now. nice stuff to work with, seem to be able to weld it. the box i have here is a modified version of whats use for keying in your details at a car wash. a problem i can see is the edges which are left bare and rust up and come through the paint job. might see about getting same thing done in aluminium instead.

We used to use a lot of it for building agricultural silenced enclosures.
The panels were filled with an acoustic insulation, and mesh pop riveted on the insides.
The outsides were painted, zintec was ideal for this, as it protected the insides of the panels that were not painted.
Same as in my box, painted outside, but the inside is protected witout paint.
It normally welds okay, but you do quite often get some contamination/porosity if you weld on the surface rather than a sheared edge.
