I don't believe it is a soldering iron as R. E. Pickstone LTD made equipment for the chemical industry in the 1960's. My first thought was that it was a "hot knife" for cutting plastic or foam but I can't see what that has to do with the chemical industry

Tell us some more info. on the end of it. The soldering guns that look similar have a rigid copper end, with the extreme tip fused together for maybe 1/4". That one is just a bent wire. If you applied it to a component with a view to soldering it, would it just deflect out of the way or could you apply any small force to it?

What happens when you switch it on? Does it glow red hot or just become hot? The eyes on the end of the 'electrode' are integral with it, so the only way to adjust the length is to change it.

They are mentioned in this publication as making laboratory equipment so I'd doubt it is a soldering iron, a tyre regroover or anything to do with pyrography

Was a gumtree freebie i was tempted by out of nosiness.
The 'seller' wasn't sure what it was....

The handle assembly is an Adcola soldering gun I think with a bespoke end for cutting, not enough watts for tires @8ob. (cant find any pictures of them though) had one as an apprentice, 5 seconds to soldering and about 20s cold enough to put away ideal for service in customers houses the handles were a brown color, but the shape other than the hot bit exactly the same,
Gave it to a friend about 2 years ago still working and with the same tip a much nicer less bulky unit than the Weller gun
