Any e-mails I get at work that mentions SAP, corporate, business etc. goes straight to the bin folder it's above my pay grade.

Good idea. Unfortunately my job is record keeping and planning heavy and there is pretty clear legislation for me and the company to abide to, and SAP is a very big part of all that.

At the workshop now I can play with the SDS drill rather than the keyboard.

What is SAP?

A waste of money. We used to have a nice little internal website which showed us how much money was left on a project, who had charged to it and what had been bought. Since SAP was forced upon us by the parent company we haven't got a clue anymore. Finding out anything writes off our high end desktops for half an hour minimum while it does nothing. Eventually you get something that thankfully you can open in Excel to get on with your real job.

Why I steer clear and stick to designing cool and clever electronics and all the supporting software and firmware

90% of my work as well. Updating SAP and creating another spreadsheet, oh the joys and job satisfaction. Hence why I tinker, bodge, fix and build stuff in my spare time.

Ditto for me but fortunately only for 50% with SAP

I am a self employed Jack Of All Trades, in the past few years i have mostly been fitting access control systems in factories and offices, PC technician, PC hardware repairer and fixed camera cctv installer. Although it looks like I might have to find a proper job as a lot of my work has dried up over the past 6 months.

The 1st Stafford show I went to was with the South Wales gang, (probably my 1987) and I had a very tatty red modified MKII GT6. After consuming a few too many beers on the Friday night we thought it would be a good idea to enter it in the modified GT6 concourse class and as there were only 2 others I got 3rd prize and still have the trophy

Following years I worked for Steve Gill Sports cars so was always on his stand and didn't get to take a car of my own

Last one I attended was in 1995 with my then GF and she had a dark green 2l Bond,

I used to be an architectural model maker in London. Then got fed up in the being in the city so moved back to Northampton and got addicted to welding so took a welding qualification. I then started doing odd welding jobs for people on cars and boats. After my son came along I decided to get a more reliable welding job in a factory for a while. Since then me and a great guy I worked with have now set up our own small welding business working on narrow boats mainly .

after reading this thread i feel like i have urinated my life against a wall
C&G qualified bricklayer did that for a few years, then then a couple of years driving around the country putting flagpoles up, then a stint as a bailiff / warrant officer i then went to work in a tool hire shop for a few years and for the last 15ish years i now do property maintenance looking after a couple of flats a few houses half a dozen garages and a pub (i even ran the pub myself for a year till we found a tenant not as nice as you would think)

CTO of a software company that provides financial data to lenders. That means that all the non-salesy stuff (specifying, designing, building, implementing and supporting the product) falls to me and my team.
Basically, it's fabrication without the hot, sharp or heavy stuff. That said, I have to be accredited by the Financial Conduct Authority so dropping hot bits of swarf in my crotch is often more appealing.

My Dad ran a garage that did heavy recovery and maintenance for HGV fleets so I was always around machinery and engines as a kid. That means I do a really poor impression of someone who knows what they're doing in a workshop as the antidote for working with financial lenders and banks.

started work at 15 my brother told me there might be a job as an electrical apprentice as his mate got another job . I left school on the Friday . went in to electrical shop and asked for a job on Saturday and guy said u start on Monday I worked with an electrician for 2 years and he left at 17 had to do all the jobs on my own . so really self taught . worked for the guy 25 years and got fedup so started on my own and have been for 23 years . mainly just do electrical work but sometimes do plumbing plastering joinery and tiling for good customers . got interested in metalwork so did machine shop practice at college evening classes for 5 years hobbies have been on and off road bikes water skiing stockcar racing fixed wing gliding hang gliding had a microlite shooting now just making things in workshop autojumbles and buying tools
