What is this item used for? (pics)

It looks like a sort of pin or peg. Weighs about 3 or 4 kilos. Not sure if it comes apart in to two pieces or whether the head slides up away from the round solid bar.

In one of the photos there appears to be what looks like brass on the head part?

It does not look like it has broken away from something. More likely been lost from something.

I kind of recognise it from years ago, but was never sure of what function they performed.

Yes, some are manually pushed up and twisted to lock it. Some have an automatic system.

The one's i've fitted most are a bit different, the post is threaded so the lock is tightened down then locked. The bit that's missing is welded to the trailer or mover, The bit you've got is pretty disposable they do get bent from time to time. I built more mover's for demount bodies than trailers and it's scary how little holds down such a heavy load.

There are several locking mechanisms`, I used twist locks with a screw down on our Bedford MK when I made all the bodies interchangeable. Uses a gurt C spanner to tighten these down.
