Don't know what it does but it can't be for something that requires a lot of force. By the time the force from the ram operates through all those gears, cams & levers there won't be a lot of force left at the working end of this device.

I know almost nothing about them. Not even what their proper name is.

I see people calling them punch press, mechanical press, toggle press, electrical press, forming press and so on.

The 'big' green one looks quite impressive - could even become a form of industrial art in the correct setting.

I will have a little bit of a play with them, see if I can figure out how they work and then I will sell them on because I don't have the space to keep them.

Dead opposite - the small cam and the leverage it has on the other end of the level means it will apply much more force than the cylinder could itself.

I would have loved to have had a punch press when I was much younger, but am retired and have no use for one in my hobby workshop. Even my #6 fly press is only likely to get little use.

Many years ago when both a friend and I were into archery & bowhunting, he got hold of a very small punch press and made a pretty good die for punching out halves of broadheads, which I helped with spot welding together and sharpening. The sheet metal he used was rather soft and would deform when an arrow hit something relatively hard, but they were good for throw away, or one shot arrows for long or cross canyon shots where you wouldn't care about retrieving them.

Although the travel seems pretty comical for the size of machine, I'd imagine with the cam and the leverage it does have quite some power behind that crimp.

Well, it is safe to say that in its current state, it is of no use to me.

I don't need a rizla cutter or want @Migmac pestering me constantly to come and cut his toe nails.

Modifications to the contraption is necessary to make it do something else.

I wonder how big the cam can be made to get bigger movement at the front of the machine before the air cylinder runs out of grunt......

Looks like the designer wanted a accurate & repeatable shut height.
Along with some other motions synchronized in there as well.
