what is the 'official' name of this tool? and can anyone recommend one?

hi folks, ive always know these as 'long shaft bench grinders' but im sure there is a proper name for these, can anyone recommend a middle of the road one? i want to fit a stainless wire wheel to one side and a flap wheel to the other side

Looks to me as if it's from some sort of polishing machine.

Dunno if it's the official name but everyone i'm aware of describes 'em as buffing machines for example or http://www.baldor.com/brands/baldor-reliance/products/motors/grinders--buffers--lathes The smaller ones that are often sold with 'pigtail' shafts (or adaptors already fitted) are just bench grinders in disguise and the properly big ones have enclosed shafts for extra support/bearings

Dunno what's about new that isn't cheapnese tat or 'kin spendy, personally i modifed an old UK made Wolf bench grinder... got one fitted with pigtails for polishing and another with adaptors i knocked up to fit convolute deburring wheels like

thanks guys, any pics @hotrodder ? i was thinking about turning up some shafts for an old bench grinder, but i simply dont have the time to be spending house playing about with it

it wont be doing any super heavy duty work, i just neen something to get the surface finish i require on collector pieces FAST, instead of wasting an hour stainless brushing and scotchbriting

I use a satin lap mops for stainless finishing available in whatever grade you need I usually use a medium on ss tubing

You can also get tapered spindles for a bench grinder. Above supplier also stocks these

Use to use ss wire brushes in a grinder (quite fine wire from rsa) but still had to go over with a satin pad to achieve the desired Finnish

And if your anywhere close to Taunton Somerset I'd happily let you have a play with the above to see if they are suitable.

Also I might have a couple of polishers here bench mounted quite light duty (suspect they came from jewellery trade) that I keep meaning to test and sell

Not got any pics to hand but they're basically just like pigtail spindle adaptors but but stepped and threaded instead of a taper. I only bothered extending the RH threaded side for simplicity

I forgot wire wheels existed with centres for use on tapered spindles ('cause i really hate wire wheels) but the polishing shop have a selection including stainless as well as flap wheels and the lap mops mentioned.
