When lifting something like a lathe I always prefer slings over chains and a good selection of wooden blocks and bearers, sometimes you need to pack an area to keep the sling away from any shafts or screws.
Look for any holes in the castings around the headstock area that allow a steel bar to be passed through the casting to attach slings too.

Some manufacturers give the proper lifting points but if you don't have those then two straps around the bed either side of the centre of mass and make sure you're not pulling against the screws or feed rod.

So I am a new guy and nothing I have is 2.5T, but since I am waiting for my first welder ever to arrive, I wanted to get engaged so I didn't begin with a request for help

For the lathe (probably less than a tonne) I dropped a sling between the bed ways and slid a short beam underneath. The engine hoist had no problem with either (50 inch 40 Taper mill around 1.5T I think).

Hope you guys like pictures. If not I will refrain.

They way you lifted the lathe is another prescribed way, monarch recommend timber beams like that on even big lathes

I lifted my mill off a pallet like this, modified my shop crane to do it:

The mill was made to be lifted at hooks in the front and back of the base. For actually moving it, I think machine skates are the way to go. Just use the crane to lift it up for the skates.

Thank You! Yea, got lucky the box fit there. This is a one 1 car garage. Space is premium and worth losing the tray under the lid. It also host my office and one of the bikes. It is cosy to say the least but it is climate controlled year round (dedicated mini-split - another brilliant piece of kit not popular over here).

@ pressbrake1 it is interesting, the diversity in products. That outdoor lathe pic with the older dude was crazy! I stared at that for a long time, and I keep going back for another look - amazing. So what are your walls made of? LOL. Our plaster board walls (aka "drywall') leaves much to desire. Actual plaster would be an improvement. Inside walls are commonly only a half inch thick to make matters worse. Hanging more than a shopping list requires thought and stud finders are only so reliable. The only good thing is repair costs a little more than water, easier than making toast and takes about that much time. A good thing if you move stuff around a lot

Oh yea. I wanted to add that lifting a lathe with a sling at a single point makes it very easy to balance - just move the carriage.
