What I get up to on the weekend

Ive been in the sheds at Chinoor and Princes Risborough Train Society , all volunteers I think ! I do the odd bit of welding and pipe bending for them , its a mighty big job refurbing the rolling stock , the carriages are Huge !

This place is on the doorstep of where I grew up. Lots of history on the site. Was originally an Ironworks - Dunaskin Ironworks (biggest in Britain at one point) then a Brickworks and finished up as an NCB site for washing and grading coal.

99% of the locos and rolling stock is all of sn industrial nature. We have an ex LMS inspection saloon that was last in use by the directors of EWS. All the other rolling stock is goods vans, brake vans and coal waggons. We have 4 sidings sitting full of locos and waggons waiting their turn for restoration or a meeting with the gas axe.

I havent got a clue as to what Chinoor have , ive seen lots of passenger coaches and deisel engines I think they have one Steam Engine , intresting work though

I remember the Dorman long steel works getting a few Sentinel loco's to replace the steam shunters when I was serving my apprenticeship, The engine sheds were next to our main work/machine main workshop, Around about 1960?. Rolls Royce engines, The only thing I can remember (I think) the big end keep bolts were stretched 0.011" instead of torquing,

Overall stretch is the proper engineering way to ensure the stress in the the bolts, torque wrenches don’t take account of the bolt condition, if they aren’t perfectly clean threads you don’t get the proper stress set. Remember seeing something like these on Tomorrow’s world years ago to get round the problem.

Some of our steam turbine bolts were stretched, The metal to metal Bailey joint bolts and the main split line bolts (51/2") inch whit,

Likewise, steam is not something that interests me a great deal. The Barclay and Ruston Hornsby diesels we have are more my thing. The Barclay I'm working on at the moment should be back in service by the summer if we dont come across any major issues. Got the mechanical oiler system to examine and overhaul next.
