Cant answer your question but when i was a teenager just starting work i had a mate who became a glazier apprentice and could not find a girlfriend for 2 years because he always had putty under his finger nails and stunk of it constant Silly answer but it is the start of Easter holidays

geez I remember that stuff...my dad always used it....it would take an eternity to set and after he'd done we'd stick our fingers in it and he'd go nuts

Last wooden window I did I just used the adhesive window tape and wood trim....still going strong. I would have thought there would be a 2 part mix available which would rapid set....get the whole job done and painted same day. Would car body filler work?

I used to love putty! the last time I used it about 6 years ago in some crittall windows it took an age to set and then formed a thick skin which fell off over time leaving a not very nice finish, the recipie definitely seemed different!

Linseed putty still seems the best. Got some little metal clips the last time though much better than trying to hammer in pins beside the glass.

On the last set of windows I did on a older house.
Ground floor windows done with linseed putty.

Take it out of the tub and knead it on old newspaer to rid yours elf of surplus linseed oil. You will find it will warm up a bit and will become easier to work.

On the upper floors. The inside of the glass was help in by good old putty. Were it had failed new linseed oil putty was used.
Outside we cut beading to side and used Window silicon sealer. We got a box from out local glass supplier.

It takes a while to get the knack, but quickly and neatly puttying in a window is one of the most satisfying skills to have. I love doing it.

I never mastered the two handed both sides at once trick though.

Looks like it's all universal nowadays, seems it's been rather a long while since I used any!

I reputtied some windows a little while ago, couldn't find a putty knife and ended up using a pointing trowel. Told my dad and the next day he gave me one of his, what's the chance I can find it in ten years when I need it again.

I had a mate who was an old school glazer replace a pane for me. I'd cleaned the frame ready. He goes up the ladder then puts the putty round the frame with both hands, holds the new glass up then marks and cuts it freehand. The frightening bit was when he taps it in with a ball pein hammer to bed the glass into the putty

metal casement putty/ can be used on wood as well. my dad was in the game for donkeys years working for hopes windows.there outfit did all the windows on the post office tower . he was always in ici billingham and wilton works renewing the glass after the chemical plants blew up was a regular occurrence . they ended up using lexan instead of glass

Probably makes sense, putty took ten years to go hard enough to properly secure a window. The great unwashed would look at a freshly puttyed in window as a heaven sent invite.

they robbed my gaffers shop a few times scraping the putty our .soon stopped them i made him some fancy window bars to go behind them and replaced the panes with laminate
