We, humans, are just like any other creature that has lived on this planet. We WILL become extinct just the same as dinosaurs but by then something else will have evolved to become the "dominant species". It might even be something that thrives on all the things that are harmful, and would kill, humans. We can, and should, do things to extend the amount of time humans can survive but whether that is 1 million or 10 million years some of the current ideas won't make any significant difference. Yes - we have to start somewhere but it's going to be many generations down the line who can make the difference that will mean humans can live here for longer. How will charging for carrier bags, stopping use of gas fires and cookers (did anyone miss that proposal last week ?) outlawing solvent paints and all the other implementations make any difference when the biggest polluters in Far East don't care about anything other than their own profit - which is fuel by the West's demand for their product ! Get China and co to abide by the same rules that we have to work under and that would make more difference than anything else.
BTW wonder how long before wood burning stoves & welding gases get banned
