what Have I done wrong???

Had a real crappy evening tonight being a novice painter:

Tried to spray underside of my bonnet but I might have well as threw the paint on...
Brand new gun, 1.4 tip, celly at 1:1 with 35 psi and no matter what adjustments I made to gun, I just could not seem to get good even coverage. Fan seemed to adjust itself when it wanted when holding gun at tilt , couldn't get to certain areas due to 1ltr pot, paint dripped onto surface from gun tip and even from pot lid...., paint reactions... the list goes on. Good job its only the underside of bonnet

Looks like i might have to rub back (AGAIN!!), and due to uneven coverage (light and dark areas) might have to re-prime AGAIN.

Feeling a little deflated and drowning sorrows with budweiser.

Any tips more than a little welcome - see for yourselves...

35psi what size compressor are you using

I am no expert but that seems a bit low

I have what sounds like the same problem with the light dark patches that go in a line it should be ok mate just give it a rub back with wet and dry and see how you go

Compressor is an old 3 hp about 200ltr. 35psi was recommended by paint vendor. Gun spec says 30 -43 psi. The gun i have was not a dear one but is making me wonder whether I should have spent more but others have acheived good finish with less expensive guns so maybe its just down to my inexperience & poor gun set up??

Check the seals on your gun - is it sucking in air causing irregular spray patterns?
Had this problem myself with cheap guns

hard to tell from those pictures but celly blooms and can give similar results or it could be just dry patches, did you spray both length and width patterns ?

before you write of the paint job flat it with 1000 grit then try polishing it with g3 or similar it may turn out fine

also what thinner did you use (besides cellulose) if you get a slow thinner it slows the drying time down but does give a better finish and more likely to avoid dry areas.

Syphon fed gun, you have not got enough overlap on your passes. You need about 50% and are you sure of you 50/50 mix or did you guess it? Check the air is getting into your pot to replace the paint coming out and get a gravity gun if you want to make the job easier. I haven't looked at my syphon gun since I got one ( two actually, a little touch £12 up gun is also perfect for small jobs)

Pressure is too low and the material you are using is very hard to get reasonable results with. Big mistake to mess around setting pressure on guns to specs which are probably way off..............increase pressure till the paint is atomising properly is the best way.

not over lapping enough.

there are anti drip diaphragms.they will stop dripping from the lid area.
as said above check gun is all tight.

Don't be down about it, do as above, and try again. Might be worth shooting a bit of the paint on some scrap stuff, it'll give you a better idea of how it's come out, and give you a little bit of practice. Also there's the confidence factor, it takes time.

You'll get there, and next time you'll be breaking a bud open to celebrate!!!

I did not spray over at 90 degrees, I did wonder about this afterwards, and used anti-bloom thinners. Pictures do not show the true problem. Will def. need to be painted again but will flat off as suggested. Probably wont get back to it now until next tues..

The gun (HVLP GF) instructions state max 43psi - thats where spec come from but inclined to agree with you.

I've only just started painting just like you and a couple of others here, I have the Cheep Silverline HVLP GF gun, about £12-25 depending where you buy it from.

Compressor I left at full pressure, 3hp 100L
50' coil air line to the Water Trap, Reg
Silverline Water Trap, Reg set at 45-50 psi ( drops to 45 at first pull then settles around 50 )
Another 50' coil airline to the gun.

Something I found a little hard was flat panels laid flat, found it allot easier with panels upright to get even coverage, could just be me though.

Just realised these diap's are for suction feed guns so not reqd.
Have a smaller 600ml pot with screw on lid so will try this on higher pressure and see how i get on...

found out what the problem was (apart from my inexperience) today.
The air coupling fitted to the base of my water trap attached to gun was loose - DOH!
When this was tightened up, paint flow was good and consistant.
