What Grease Should I Use

Gear oil.
Once cleaned up, give it a good coating of the stuff.
Wipe off the excess and jobs a good one.

As said, don't use grease! Use a thickish oil.

Thick oils are almost as bad as grease for trapping crap. A fairly thin oil which is reapplied regularly is best, but neither of the other two are optimal in dusty environments.

Normal grease should be fine unless you're generating large amounts of dust etc. in your workshop. I use normal grease on mine, but I do also clean my vices after use, and keep dust covers over them when not in use.

That made me giggle ( she even asked me what I was laughing at ) - I generally can 'just about' see my vice for 99% of the time.. then I have a clear up, clean oil grease everything... within a week............ :-)

i just got my vice second hand clagged it on bench 30 years ago and that's it. cleaned the crap of it now and then and a quck coat of hammer sh..ite its. never seen oil apart from only on the jaws and that was wiped off

I just asked my Father In Law.
He said in all his years as a sheet metal worker, they only used 3 in 1.
Just poke the tube in the hole, jib done.


If vice stopped being a vice and turned into a lump.
They boiled it in dirty diesel.

I'd agree. Not gonna be high wear. I just squirt a bit of hydraulic oil on mine when they need it. Works for my lathe why wouldn't it work on the vice.

I think all this talk of lubricating your number 6 vice screw when it gets stiff, is starting to go along the wrong vein, if you feel the need to cover it before it goes stiff or cover it after it has gone stiff because you are embarrassed at the condition of your number 6, or if lubrication make it feel better, then that is maybe not a bad vice to adopt after all, and is possibly good advice.

Well ive assembled the vice today, I used some Ep90 mixed with a little grease. It's working a treat.

It's a present for my brother, he won't stretch its legs at all. I'm setting him up with a little home workshop.

That's another reason, (as well as the colour factor), that I use graphite in my wax. In all reality though, cast iron actually needs no lubricant, as it's classed as a self lubricating material.

You don't have to use lubricant but you do need to watch blunting cutting tools on cast iron working dry
