Just had a new handbrake cable fitted to my Kia Sorento due to the pivot/equaliser fitted on the back axle seizing. Can any one recommend what grease to 'cover it in' to stop salt etc from seizing it again in a few years time
Thanks in advance Mark
Marine waterproof multi-purpose grease is the best for this purpose. You could also use normal grease, the type for wheel bearings etc, but it will need to be re-applied regularly as it tends to wash off in an exposed location.
I discovered Marine waterproof grease when I regularly rode off road motorcycles and became sick of water getting to parts it shouldn't !
Any calcium based grease is marine type grease. Lithium based is the bog standard stuff generally used on bearings, joints etc. Whatever you use, you'll need to reapply occasionally.
Thanks Guys for the replies - in the end went on e-bay and purchased "Marine Waterproof Grease Aquaslip 500g PREVENTS CORROSION RESISTANCE TO SALT" for £5.99 + £1.99 delivery. Just for the record i have never had problems with sticking/seizing handbrake cables in 30 years of motoring until 6 years ago when we moved to our current home, since then i have had 2 Landrover Freelanders and now the Sorento all of which have had to have seized handbrake cables replaced. The only connections i can come up with are:- 1) we are the 1st high spot in Staffordshire that borders the cheshire plains so we do get battered a bit by the weather 2) there is a manhole cover on my drive that just happens to sit directly in the middle of the back axles when parked up 3) there is a farm just over the field behind us that recycles farm waste and the smell is quite gross and often a manhole in the road just down the road often discharges some wierd stuff that funnily enough smells exactly the same as the farm so whether there is something from the farm recycling that gives off corrosive gas/vapour and it some how finds its way into the sewerage system and then escapes via the man hole on my drive - who knows - Thanks Guys, Mark
I'd drop a letter to the environmental agency about a slurry type smell coming from your manhole and ask is it anything to worry about... they will come along and investigate as to what it is , take samples from the manhole wall etc and take things further if needed .
Siezed on hand brake cable .. do you need to put the hand brake on when parked at home ?
Lots of so called improved things like brake cables tend to bind in at the slighest hint of grit on the lining sheath or on friction points if pulled on hard on a rgular basis .
I used to slather my BX19 friction points in a baby's bum cream of zinc & castor oil called Penaten ( sp) and clean it off & replace it when I did an engine oil change & checked my brake pads . It was sufficiently thick to set to make a crust and break to make a still sealed joint & keep the crap out .
I've never heard of copper grease being bettered for friction points that get grit on them but it does have to be serviced like any other grease.
Happen the finer countryside grits and puddles don't help the situation either.
lucas "red & tacky" grease is the stuff i use, cheap as chips.
use to build road gritters and this stuff was used all over em.
makes excellent stern tube grease on boats ,its all i use..
no flick off on turning shafts.
slightly off topic but if anyone ever has diesel bug in fuel tanks then lucas make a excellent biocide .
works out at a quarter of the price of boat badged stuff..
i avoid buying anything with the word marine in it if i can help it.
