Hi, i have just got my hands on my 1st mig, it comes with a bottle of Co2, what does this allow me to weld and what is the best type of gas for car panel repairs. Regards David.
well dave i used c02 for a long time found it ok but used to get a lot of spatter and a rough ark but swiched over to air products recentley now i use argon c02 mix and what a difrence in weld quality no spatter and stable ark i would recomend u change to argon c02 you will see a big difrence
CO2 can be used for welding mild steel, but there would be issues with most other metals.
It's not fantastic for mild steel but will do the job. You might find the arc a little unstable, and little blobs of weld spitting out from the weld that you might need to clean off (spatter).
An Argon/CO2 mix would be the best gas for mild steel, and if you got a mix like the BOC Argoshield Light (many others have an equivalent - it's 95% argon, 3% C02 and 2% O2 from memory) that would give a lovely stable arc and a nice weld shape on thin mild steel, and would be fine for stainless steel as well.
