I've got some of those - 3M I think. Not bad but they get pretty mucky in the workshop so you go through them fairly quickly. I like the convenience of over the ear type to be honest, but after reading the thread @Gragson referenced above I might have to stick to the in-ear ones as it looks like a common problemIf over the ear type are causing a conflict with other PPE then I’d look at this type

They are just as effective as muffs, sometimes even better as there is no seal to damage
You make a good observation about getting the plug dirty, it can lead to infections of the ear canalI've got some of those - 3M I think. Re the glasses under ear defenders / head sets yes they leak noise into the ear in varying amounts size of arms and quality of seal material on head sets, some are really hard plastic things and worse when cold other are Jell filled and soft they tend to be better, Have some 3M type 2 ear defenders which are great. I fly with Pilot jell filled ones keep the speck arms above the cups, a surprising amount of noise is transmitted through the bone in your head. This is what we get at work, little easy close and open case but stays closed in overalls pockets for weeks at a time which is real handy as we normally use the ear defender on hard hat but when defender and plug is necessary they are always there nice and clean rather than all covered in lint
Also with the seal, Is there any conflict with safety glasses going under the seal to sit on the ear or is it just me thinking that it sounds slightly louder in my head.
Its a well recognised issue that safety specs / specs will compromise the performance of over the ear hearing protectionRe the glasses under ear defenders / head sets yes they leak noise into the ear in varying amounts size of arms and quality of seal material on head sets, some are really hard plastic things and worse when cold other are Jell filled and soft they tend to be better, Have some 3M type 2 ear defenders which are great. Noise suppression is a continual source of debate on flying forums especially Helicopter ones
