what does payment pending mean with paypal

i bought a phone off ebay and it arrived with a cracked screen

me and the seller agreed on a £30 partial refund to cover the cost of replacement and then he would claim of rm

he decided to send me the whole amount of £100 back and said he thought i was going to send the phone back to him

i said this wasnt the case so he has now asked me to send him £70 which is the £100 minus £30

when i looked in paypal to make sure the money had come in before i refunded him it says under the payment status column

pendind until 16 march

what does this mean

does it mean that he can take the money back if he wants to as i dont really trust him and am wondering if he wants me to send him some money then take his money back aswell

can he do this or not

once a payment shows up in my paypal account can it be taken back

sorry for the long ramble but dont want to get conned as fairly new to paypal

ring paypall up there verry helpfull

im 60 quid down on a drill and lodged a complaint to get money back :mad:

It means he has paid by an echeque, fairly common and should be ok, means he has no available funds sitting in his paypal account to do an immediate refund.

Also..best way is to ask him to cancel the pending payment and send the correct one, you will end up in a mess sending the excess back ans will probably lose out in the end

Peyment pending will be an e-check.

It's really dodgy for someone to send more money than you wanted and ask for you to send money back. Think Nigerian scam. Don't do it on any account! It's also unknown for a seller to refund before they have a return. This must be a con.

Have gave this some thought.

To protect yourself fully you should file a case as 'item not as described', you will then be told to return it for a full refund, you MUST send it recorded delivery, you are then gauranteed a full refund but will lose out on the return postage.

As Malcolm mentions, there is a common scam of sending too much money and this could be the case, you may be up against an experienced scammer and the only option to avoid getting caught is forget private agreements and partial refunds and do it by the rules of Ebay for buyer protection.

if i start a case then how do i stop the payment he has already sent me?

i think atm i will wait until the 16th of march and see what happens then

i know it is a common scam but i was the one who suggested a partial refund

What many people don't realise is any payment through paypal can be grabbed back by the banks or credit card company even weeks after it has cleared for a few reasons, hence the benefit of sticking with Ebays rules.

Doing it by the book means you would be refunded by Ebay buyer protection itself if the 3rd party scams you.

So waiting until the 16th, seeing it has cleared, thinking you are safe and sending off the excess £70 is not a good idea at all.

As the others have said, out and out scam!
There's no doubt whatsoever, his payment to you is pending but he wants you to send him £70 which will clear immediately and you send the phone back.
His payment never clears so you're minus £170 and have no phone.
Your best bet is to contact paypal and explain everything in detail and see what they advise but in the meantime, do not send the phone or his £70.

Payments

It smells.Beware, it may turn out OK, I had an E cheque over a year ago and it worked out just fine, but I didnt send the goods till the cheque cleared.

I would contact Paypal, they are all tied in now, E bay and paypal, they have access to his history which you have not. it puts the wheels in motion. You can speak with a human being and it makes life so much easier than writing a description of whats gone on.
Play it by the book-- and you cant go wrong, do it as you half proposed and maybe kiss goodbuy to a phone and £170. I know what I would do.

Send the phone back and get your money refunded by paypal for item not as described. Have you sent the seller proof of the damage and have they acknowledged it ? They could be thinking the scammer is you, it happens with phones apparently where a broken replacement is sent back and a refund requested.

if u payed by paypall through ebay ring ebay up and they can sort it ,they have all details it only takes a few mins
