What does my tool do?

A friend gave me an old box of tools today, mostly old files, drill bits etc.

But in the bottom was a tool bit that has me stumped.
It's generally in the shape of a spade bit but it tapers to each edge from the middle and has a number of slots that increase in width along the edges.

Any ideas what it's for people?

Poor picture, but looks like a standard wire gauge, for checking wire sizes and also sheet metal. The slot marked 16 should be one sixteenth of an inch wide.

I expect there is/was some numbers etched on by each slot..?

Can't see any numbers but it is fairly rusty.

To me it should have a wooden handle. The slots fit different wood saw blades for setting the teeth after sharpening. From the days before hard point hand saws. Later versions used pliers with adjustable anvils to make sting more repeatable.

Yep its a saw setter, used for circular & very large handsaws. I have one just like it.

all well and good but can it bend over teeth to put a set on - on circular plate saws??-- was a regular task in the 60s/70s on stuff up yo 28" diam, saws could be sharpened several times a day, especially on hardwood. Then came TCT

Where I live near the edge of an inert land fill site at Wisbech ( apple growing area ) there was a massive 200 foot long x 10 feet high x 30 foot base pile of grubbed out apple trees that contained heavy cut branches in about 4 foot lengths , boles , stumps and lots of excavated roots .

Guy the owner of the site contracted some local cutting service to get a guy ( about 40 yrs old ) with the big tractor driven 36 inch x 3/8 thick rough work log saw c/w sliding cradle . It had two matched pairs of belts driving it from the PTO . Evidently he made his own blades out of profile cut high carbon plate . It was a real man eater if you didn't know what you were doing even though it had all the HASAW safety guards & a remote cut off / stop frame .

One morning I heard him shouting & cussing fit to bust. As I couldn't readily see him I went over to check he was alright and he showed me the remains of a big 1/2 " square iron spike that had been walloped in the bole he was cutting up .
About 15 teeth were really screwed , he said no probs it's an occupational hazzard . He used a power grinder run off a genny in his van that slotted into a purpose made frame to resize the blade a bit & recut deeper teeth . Then he hand sharpened the blades with his files & put the set back on the blade with two 12" adjustable spanners . He showed me how accurate he'd become by getting a reel of cotton and running it in the set .. it hardly showed any variation of line .
