I've bought myself an old Clarke Hobby 90 MIG and tried it out using pub CO2 from our club bar. It came with a reel of 0.6mm wire.
I bought a sheet of 1mm steel to practice on and then forgot to buy snips to cut it up with. So in the meantime I found some old rusty metal lying around which is 1.5mm thick and gave it a going over with the angle grinder.
Played around with the wire feed since the handbook says to run it at 5-6 and that just spattered everywhere. I turned it down to 2 and this is the result.
I think the metal is a bit too thick for the machine when trying to weld two pieces together - it doesn't seem to penetrate, just builds up on top. Having said that I tried to snap it and the metal is bending rather than the joint giving way.
I blew a couple of holes and had a go at filling them in.
The last time I welded was about 20 years ago and all I achieved then was to blast holes in everything, so this is at least some kind of progress.
But is it any good?
