What do you reckon this is? (oily rust in axle body?)

So the shot is down an axle body tube.

Ive not tested to see if its magnetic, but i doubt it matters.

The fact its in the tube rather than down in the diff "sump" must mean it was all spinning about inside.

Axle was sold to me as having a noisy diff. Its going to be stuffed, right? I mean rather than just wishful thinking that changing the oil will cure the issues?



Im being lazy. It seems that step one of salisbury axle checking is to make the tools (spreader, height block) required to start the job.


Anyway, what do you reckon? Salisbury axle from a defender 110. 1994 if that makes any difference to anything.

Someone waded a hot axle into a deep ford and it sucked the water in.
Stuffed indeed.

Yes, I would say muddy water sucked in from wading, that's why they have the breathers piped away up higher. The water has been boiled off, leaving the mud/dirt/detritus behind.

Try washing it out and inspect, turning over to see if any noisy bearings, which will be more obvious when not oily. You could utilise a press instead of a spreader to distort the case.

old transit vans used to do that , the ones used for paper delivery they did high miles at high speed , and on wet days used to suck in water / condensation , they ate diffs too .

Ive seen two sorts of spreadders, ones that compress the case, like this -

And then ones that stretch the case, like this -

Ive also seen it mentioned that the "correct" tool locates in the two recesses outside of the bolt pattern, but ive not seen one of those in a photo.

Im guessing it probably doesnt make much difference as to if its compressed or stretched?

I'd certainly flush it out and assess if it's survivable before pulling it all apart.
Always thought the salisbury was a really dumb design concept, why not just make a casing that you can remove and service the dif without this whole stretching it malarkey, truly bonkers idea

Seems like madness to me - to make something thats supposed to be strong to be flexible enough to change clearances on flexing.
