Someone I know had the same problem. He's eighty and insurance wanted a fortune. He opened a flex plus account with Nat West, which you pay for, and it includes very good travel insurance, much cheaper than he was quoted. Worth trying.

My father had some fancy account with Lloyds for the same reason, reckoned the perks were worth the monthly fees, his included breakdown too I think.

Unfortunately my problems are pretty serious apparently and nobody wants the risk of repatriating me either dead or alive! It has been suggested I get insurance actually in the US but I don't know where to start with that and I am not a resident so it would complicate matters.
