What changed with vehicle batteries to make them maintenance free?

Yes.After starting car, I drove 11 miles last night so bit of heat in engine at point of stopping even though not full operating temp. (2lt turbo diesel). Stopped to make an 8 min phone call. The outside temp was 5 degrees. Tried to start car to continue journey, no chance. Had to buy new battery this afternoon. 70Amp hrs. I remember in the 80s when the battery on a 5.3lt jag was only 44 amp hrs. I suppose there is much more going on electrically these days with vehicles.

Copped me out two weeks ago and always drive with all electrics off at least a mile from home.
Charging wouldn't have it Bosch.
In the past I have always fitted a larger spec than recommended usually the cold cranking, this time motor factors said no warranty as not on the list so had to have inferior to retain a guarantee.
30yr ago fitted sealed units 640 amp cold start to Pintos no larger than standard but 1/3 higher cold cranking, lighter in weigh and could turn upside down.

problem is avalible voltage whilst cranking. not uncommon for a car to pull 30-50 amps before you even think about the starter motor. oh and you need about 7volts minumum avalible else ecu resets will start happening

I bought a red top Optima spiral wound battery around 14 years ago. Swapped it from vehicle to vehicle as i changed vehicles. Pricey but well worth it in my view. not a very large battery but label stated 1050CCA. It was still going strong on my Land Cruiser when i sold it 18 months ago. If you want a free one,there are a few left up on the MOON,Optima spiral wound gel filled batteries were apparently developed for and used on the lunar buggies.They can also handle massive amounts of charging current,

Best battery I ever had no longer made after the law suit 1993. Sealed, light weight and used in motor sport.
Think it was an 075 or 085 check out the ampage and cold cranking when run of the mill spec was 380 cold cranking.

The 44 amp/hr that I made reference to was an Exide, one of the best batteries I have had. I feel sure (especially with the advance in technologhy) that there are some good stuff out there. The Optima spiral batteries that Gordon mentioned sound like a good bit of kit.
