What car?

Problem is …. As many of you have said “what do I get next?

It's not much help but I tend to search autotrader by what I Don't want, eg-
no EV and no DPF (rules out diesels since around 2008), so, Petrol then.
no DSG (rules out vw/audi/skoda/seat autos, and maybe some others)
no CVT autos (although might be open to Lexus-type quality...)

then try to cut down the volume by searching what I Do want, and a budget, then see what autotrader etc puts forward.

I Think I'd like a Petrol V8 torque-coverter-Auto SUV for under £6k, with less than 100k miles which does 30+mpg, costs under £200pa road tax and is cheap to insure - but I'm struggling...

Might be more choice and compromise on something if older Honda CRVs and Toyota RAVs used torque-converters instead of CVTs...

As an oldie I’m not sure what to go for next…. Hybrid, petrol, diesel, electric .

5 years ago I was considering whether it was time to go electric, but wasn't sure. Now I'm absolutely certain I'll be sticking with diesel for the foreseeable future.

Hello.
I am looking for a replacement for my 2017 40,000ml 4wd diesel 150 BHP Skoda YetI.
Can you suggest a good replacement for the Yeti - bearing in mind I live in a rural area which can have fairly extreme weather conditions?
As an oldie I’m not sure what to go for next…. Hybrid, petrol, diesel, electric .
What do you think?

I really like the car.
I bought a couple of years ago with 12,500miles on it- thinking it would be trouble free for years to come.
I reckon it was a “Friday car” because I have had the Haldex 4WD unit fail under dealers warranty.
The Aircon then packed up and required a new radiator.

I bought a new set of Michelin cross climate tyres for it just before Christmas - only to end up with a sidewall puncture a week later - so another new tyre is required.

The car has always been serviced as I originally planned to keep it for many years to come.

Now , the 6 speed DSG gearbox / clutch is juddering between gear changes. A local garage is going to check if any codes are showing up this afternoon and is also going to check the oil condition (which was replaced at 20,000 miles).

I am beginning to wonder if this car is jinxed? - Hence the reason for thinking about a change.

My dad had 2 4x4 Tdi Yetis. One manual one dsg, brother also had a 4x4 Tdi dsg Yeti.
No issues at all with any of them. I guess you can get unlucky with any car.
My dad, who's 76, changed his 2016 Yeti which he bought new for a new Karoq 4x4 150 dsg Tdi 2 years ago. He's only done about 10k miles in it but loves it. He plans to keep it a few more years then buy his 'last' car which will again be a non hybrid diesel. He figures that will then last him all his driving days and he'll never have to drive an electric.
Brother now has a Kodiaq 4x4 Tdi.

New tyres are always a problem for me too. Normally one will get a puncture within a few weeks, and back in the summer I was using the petrol brushcutter (strimmer) in the front garden close to the vehicles. The metal blade snagged in some long grass, and I yanked it free. Only for it to swing into the sidewall of one of my Kleber Quadraxer tyres, resulting in a nice six inch clean cut, and a ruined tyre, and a broken brushcutter. Because I threw it up the garden.

But your dilemma ....... Haldex units are pretty reliable, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Aircon is always a liability, as the condenser radiators are always vulnerable and are quite fragile, no matter what vehicle you buy. You will see so many vehicles advertised for sale, stating that the aircon "just needs regassing", which invariably means it will need a new condenser as a minimum, so that is not really a reason to reject the Yeti.

My only concern would be the DSG gearbox, to me its an unnecessary complication, and would prefer a "normal" auto, but I understand a lot of faults are down to incorrect oil, the EXACT make and spec the manufacturer recommends, not what a garage thinks will be OK, and poor electrical connections.

I am a big advocate of "better the devil you know", and remember that just because something is new, does not mean it will not break down, or be any more reliable than what you already have.

Visited the repair garage today which is owned by an ex VW trained mechanic.
We drove the car and he seems to think that it’s not the DSG. The oil was the correct type, and no fault codes shown.
The car is booked for next Monday. He is going to disconnect the prop shaft to eliminate the centre bearing and possibly a recurring Haldex lock up problem which may have been caused by moisture short circuiting the ECU.
I have driven through a deeply flooded road recently so there may be some method in his madness .
Will give you an update after his diagnosis is complete.

Haldex systems can throw up a few issues but most of them easily resolved, oil and filter changes predominantly. Control units can and do fail due to water ingress. There are several very knowledgeable companies who can repair these.

DSG gearboxes need serviced every 40k miles. It is not just oil replacement however. They contain clutches which need adjustment. They are misunderstood and neglected then fail giving them an undeserved reputation of unreliability.

As a friend of my other half discovered - part-exed a reliable old car for a lot newer one from a dealer . . . could not cure electrical issues with it, even using external specialists.

Finally chopped it back in for something else.

A lot of us can run old cars as we can/want to fix 'em though - if you were paying someone to sort out the issues with older cars, it's time off the road and expensive.
