what car resto welder for £150

hi guys,

im on a tight budget trying to get my project car back on the road and there are a few rust holes!

i want to buy a welder and do it myself, and in the process/before i do, learn to weld.

what welders would you guys suggest in this budget?

Hi Will

I'm a classic car restorer and I weld with a Snap-On 130 Turbo MIG welder. Its a small, compact unit so its easy enough to transport around if need be, and the amps are low enough for thin car bodywork. I got mine for around the £200 mark, so if you can stretch another 50 quid you should have yourself a top class welder.

The smaller Clarke welders are near that price. They are a forum favorite. I had an 130EN and loved it.

Check with user weldequip, he is supposed to have the best price. I don't thnk he has the low-end models under a 130 but I would get a 130 as a minimum anyway.

I've just order a Clarke 135TE off weldequip for £195 Incl Delivery, after talking to Steve (weldequip) this is really the lowest rated machine they recommend (Amp wise) and dont think they stock anything lower!
His price beats MachineMart (one of the high street sellers) on price and you get the benefit of sending PM's at stupid o'clock when all shops are closed.

What car project are you working on?

the car is an '84 polo, with a 110bhp engine and it should weigh under 800kg

Stock mini 617 kg (1,360 lb) to 686 kg. Add a few shiny bits and up it goes
I bet the 30hp would see better mpg!
