What bandsaw

I am thinking about buying a new saw, as my power hacksaw can only take up to 150mm sections. I'd be looking for something that could manage 250mm round at 90 degrees & I think I'd probably go for a bandsaw this time. Is it possible to get for about £1k without buy a POS?

I bought a used startrite bandsaw for similar money. My opinion is bandsaws are generally an industrial tool and generally used ones are prone to industrial use and ABUSE. By the time i had the saw fixed up properly and got it cutting smooth and true and straight, i was better and cheaper if i bought a new saw. I regretted so much i didn't buy a saw with a rotating head that i sold the saw a after fixing it and bought a new saw with a rotating head. Them rotating vices for cutting angles are just a pain. That's my opinion and it would be more valid depending on how heavily you use the bandsaw

I agree. My bandsaw has a movable vice for angles and while it works well a movable bow would be a dam sight better. Now I just keep the vice locked up for 90's and drop a home made jig in it for 45's to save moving and setting it. At least this way my cuts are consistent

Ok so anyone got any ideas for a new one? Ive looked at various makers online & had prices but I cant get anything for anything like £1k. I'm thinking that I will have to go down to maybe 8" capacity and get a used one for the money I cab afford to spend.

If you are wanting a cheap horizontal band saw for DIY use there is plenty around for a lot less than £1k, and they work well enough if properly set up, and you dont mind taking things slowly. If you are looking for industrial metal cutting bandsaw then I would say you would be very lucky indeed to buy anything usable for around £1k.

So far I havent stumbled upon any DIY type saws tha get any where near a capacity of 250mm diameter.

I've seen seen a few large industrial type horizontal bandsaws come up on here http://www.sweeney-kincaid.com/Sales/CurrentAuction.aspx but as with anything second hand or from an auction you take a risk.

I've found the SK auctions a bit hit and miss, but have had some good bargains from them (the Nederman hose at £40 being a great example!), but it's also worth keeping an eye on their closed/unsold lots page - this was added quite recently and they show the fixed price that the seller will accept. Well worth visiting on a Friday, after the Thursday auctions have closed to see if there are any near-misses

It can be either, so long as I can cut 250mm diameter bar stock with it.

Would have thought the one I linked to would have been fine. But if you dont use Ebay though, might be pretty difficult to find anything without paying through the nose for something from a dealer?

Aye it would have done the job I should imagine, unfortunately it's eneded now. I am watching similar ones on ebay but I think it's good to ask on the forum to see what folks thoughts are.

What about that saw? Looks more compact than the other band saws, is it maybe because it's not so heavy duty?
