Look like they would work well for components with a wire coming out of them, think Lambda sensor or similar - but shorter obviously.

Yep, Weatherhead sockets which I have used on compact 90* fittings on hydraulic rams and valve blocks located in very tight spaces. The Screwdriver shaped socket on the right is a drag link socket.

They had some at my friend's yard and we used them as a socket version of an open end spanner quite handy at times.

your probably right Gordon lad worked on a lot of diesels so would be used on diesel pumps and injector nuts

The steering links on my Mahindra MM540 Jeep are like that ! Pull out a split pin, screw in the plug to take up slack and lock plug with new spit pin. This is a 1993 vehicle but WWII design of components
