Just had look at the holes and they are NOT threaded. Plus they are about 1.5" deep.

I think they are for some kind of rod / pipe bending - maybe for putting 90 degree bends in rod rather than a nice radius curve?

I wonder if they are the sort of size brake lines would be?

There was a tool for holding older motorcycle cylinder heads in a vice at one time, it was just a hex bar with a different sized spark plug thread at each end.

I found one of those in a job lot of tools I bought at an auction, here it is:

I have been sorting through them one box at a time and found it after reading this thread a few days ago, so I came back to register and show you it.

I'm also hoping to do some panel work on a van I've just bought, so stay tuned for some noob questions come the time.

I suspect the plug is wound into the head then clamped in the vice, the hex is certainly big enough for that.

Yeah id go along with that. Still leaves me none the wiser regarding the holes in my vice...

Saw the same bloke at another autojumble today. He had another autovice.

I asked what the holes were for and he said he had been told the were for cropping rod. Trouble is they are blind holes meaning the amount of rod you coud crop woud be limited.

However i noticed the vice he was selling had another part not on mine. A removable jaw that fits into the pipe vice presumably for smaller diameter pipe. Basically a bit of flat bar with a v shape cut into it (shoud be easy enough to fabricate) but i noticed this had a hole in it.

I wonder if the holes on the side were just to hold the ancilliaries when not in use?

Doubtful. Would be about as useful as a chocolate fire guard. First bit of movement and whatever is in there would likely slip/drop out. Are you sure they've never been threaded? Some ape might have smoothed the threads through cross threading or suchlike.

What are the 2 different pipe jaws you have like?

I need to fab some for mine although I thought there was only 1 - which goes into the moving side of the vice

Any advice you can give me would be great
