what are these 'hinges' called

Kid' blackboards / easal's used to come with a metal locking type hinge fitted approx half way down so that the easal wouldnt fold in together and collapse - what are these called as i need to locate a couple - have googled various terms but cant find an exact description

Try googling, cupboard stay, or flap stay, door stay, etc,
Edit: there's some here, but most diy or hardware shops should have them, also used a lot in caravans, so maybe try a caravan accessory shop.

I call it two strips of metal with a hole in each end and a small tab welded on the end of one. Such a simple thing would be quicker to make, surely?

Hi Stereophoney - thats what i want them for, i bought a cheap and cheerfull B&Q equivalent to a workmate and removed the top and replaced it with 8mm plate to make a small welding table (all credit to GRAHAM S for his original post - http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=19811) . The thing is really steady but i am a bit concerned about the legs closing together a bit at a time and me not noticing it and then it coming to the point that it could tip - its blinkin heavy so will do a bit of damage

Pete - i see what you saying about easy to 'knock up', but i'm out of Argonshield until the new year (no pennies), i dont have any suitable metal lying around (just a diy'er), and just wanted to finish the table off so that i have got 'closure' in my head that its complete. - quite willing to thro some pennies your way if you fancy 'knocking' 2 up

Now i know what they are called thanks to TIG Paul i can at least see whats around

A nice solution in a confined space though. I thought it was mounted on the swivel chair base for a second.

you could go for leg holder 'GT' spec and get one of these?

They are a bit pricey but you would only need one.

years ago my grandad made me a wooden toy chest (many years ago) with one of these on the lid - still works!

Thanks Guys for the replies - space is tight in my garage and i get a bit of backache after bending for a while (probably the weight from my gut), so when i saw Graham S's post it seemed perfect, although it did take me almost 12 months to get it to this stage (mithering newbie). If i could just get these 'hinge' things fitted then the job would be 'finished' in my mind. I dont like to have things 'almost' finished thats why i want closure on it. I have attached a couple of more photos - CHUNKO you gave advice on my welds on joining the plates so i value your comments/opinons

Simples solution.
Weld a pair of tabs half way down each of the lower legs on one side, pivot a piece of bar in between them and weld a slotted tab on the base of the table under the deck for this to sit in and secure the spar with a wing nut. Does that make sense?
A pair of these would make a triangle and not cost anything.

Not sure I quite get that Chunko but sounds along the lines I was thinking, use a strip of flat bar with notch cut out of one end. Bolt other end to one side of leg and use washers so it moves freely, bolt in opposing side with nuts both sides of leg so neck of bolt can protrude and notch sits over that creating firm triangle. Hard to explain..if I wasn't off to bed I'd do a sketch..
