What are these beams/trusses called /why are they used ?

just been in a Starbucks using there wifi and was having a look at the buildings construction as you do '
So those lattice trusses I reckon 50mm shs what weight would those support say in 4 MM wall thickness? And why not use an I beam instead ???
Would the height of the trusses affect the strength ? I'm thinking not in fact surely the less height the better ?..

YThe roof just looked like zed purlins with king span insulated roofing sheets , all very industrial looking . So you reckon it's a bit like those I beams with the hexagon cut outs in the web ?? Looks pretty but not so much load bearing ??maybe welder Paul or one of the other big fabrication can give us a definitive answer .?

There appears to be a lot of glass in which case it could be to hold all the walls in place

Lattice trusses can carry some fair weights, using a very small section, but more time consuming to fabricate.

A fairly small UB would take the place of those lattice beams, which would be quick to fabricate, but someone obviously wanted something a bit more light and airy.

Comes down to aesthetics really.

as above strength, if you look at lighting rigs / truss they are all this type of construction, light but strong

I went to the Eden project not long after it opened and spent the whole time looking at the building and structure...

I like it done like this on dropped horizontals u beams are not attractive in any way in this application or pretty much any were they can be seen
Load carry capacity is pretty vast just consider how the forces work

While we are on the subjest, how would you go about calculating the load lattice joist could carry?

For arguments sake made out of 40x40x3mm SHS 7.5m long with a depth of 300mm and the cross braces at 45 degrees.

Wouldn't frankly. I could look it all up but still don't have insurance for it. Faced with having to for building regs for some obscure reason I can't yet imagine I should ring the stuctural engineer I used on the last project like it as he shot down the building inspector on the spot.
BTW he can't fabricate or weld worth a jot and smashed the underside of his porche driving onto site. So let's respect the fact that nobody knows it all. My sixteen year old daughter could work out a low slung car and a rutted site track don't mix
